Janice organised a trip to Newbury races, and we were so lucky that it did not rain on us, the forecast was for showers. We all enjoyed ourselves and a few people actually won some money, including Shirley. Many thanks to Janice for organising yet another wonderful trip.

Keeping Safe on the Internet was the title of a talk given to our members by Mr Dave Bevis at our August meeting. There are many ways a computer can be compromised mainly by a virus, a Trojan or by phishing and these can be prevented by the installation of an anti virus programme and a firewall, but a lot of common sense also helps. If an e-mail is received from someone not known to you, and has an attachment, do not open it and if it is a “phishing” communication on no account give any financial or personal details. Microsoft and major reputable banks will never ask for information by e-mail so any message reputed to be from them should be deleted. When shopping or doing any financial transactions ensure that the website starts with https, not just http, a bona fide site will have a padlock on the screen. He gave many other useful tips and information regarding passwords and pins so hopefully everyone should be able to feel safe whilst using the internet in future. Following the talk members were able to browse old scrap books of the WI and a 1970’s booklet about Oakley which were found recently at the village hall which brought back many memories for some of the long standing members and proved interesting to the newer members to see how things have changed. The next few months will be very busy with many interesting events arranged, starting with a trip to Newbury races, followed by two walks, one in Winchester and one around Oakley both finishing with either a tea or lunch. There will also be a skittles evening and visits to the Embroidery Chapel at Greenham Common which is celebrating 100 years of the WI and a trip to Bombay Sapphire. The Hampshire Federation Autumn Council Meeting will be held in October at The Anvil with Peter and Dan Snow being guest speakers and the Loddon Group Autumn Meeting will have 60’s and 70’s music as entertainment following their business. On November 21st there will be a Coffee, Cake and Craft morning at the Andover Road Village Hall so members will be busy preparing for this. All this is in addition to many events arranged by the Federation including a centenary lunch at Audleys Wood and a visit to the Hampshire Archives followed by a cream tea. At the September meeting there will be a talk by Stan Burton on Being a Judge at the London Olympics and as usual any guest will be made most welcome, the meeting being on Tuesday 8th September at the usual venue of the Village Hall in Andover Road starting at 7.30pm. We had to say goodbye to Gladys who has been a member for more than 30 years as she is moving to Wiltshire. Lynn our president presented Gladys with a beautiful card, made by Janice, see picture. |
