Oakley & Deane WI sold lots of cakes at the village show, we sold out completely! The afternoon was dry and the sun even made an appearance too. We hope that we also managed to interest some women in to trying out our WI.

Two gentlemen from Waitrose management came to our August meeting to tell us about the corporate social responsibility of John Lewis and Waitrose. John Lewis had been apprenticed to a draper originally and opened his first shop in Oxford Street in 1864. He bought up Peter Jones’ business when he died and decided to call his employees partners and give them shares in the profits. Everyone is equal and can have their say. “Never knowingly undersold” became their motto in 1925. Any customer can receive the difference if they find something cheaper in another shop. They keep an eye on groceries to make them competitive. Leckford farm, which was bought in 1928 embodies their principles and they endeavour to sell British food. The WI has visited their Longstock water meadows. John Lewis recycle sofas and mattresses. Food goes to a digester and decent food left over goes to charities. They try to give the public what they like and are opening a sushi bar this month.
Cakes were requested to sell at the Village Show. There is another crochet and needle felting workshop at Weyhill and another Quiz walk at Eastleigh. Skittles is at the Fox on September 14th to choose a team for the Group match on September 21st. There was a display of vintage packaging brought in by members. |
