A group of members went to Winchester and had a lovely walk, stopping for tea at The Hospital of St. Cross. We missed the rain showers too. Thank you Jenny for organising this.

Jennifer was lucky enough to get a ticket to the AGM in London. She said "Singing God save the Queen with 5,000 WI members when Her Majesty was actually there was wonderful as was singing Jerusalem. It was a great day."
Being Chief Judge at the London Olympics was the title of the talk given to Oakley and Deane W.I. at our September meeting by Stan Burton. Stan was Meeting Manager at the Olympics in 2012 and it was due to him and his team that it ran so smoothly. All the events had to adhere to a strict timetable starting at the exact advertised time not even one second earlier and not more than 30 seconds late, which was quite an achievement when he explained the routine of the competitors. Beside the stadium there was a warm up track so they had to go from there to a call room where their bags were checked and any advertising material or items not required for the race were confiscated then to the final call room where there was a warm up area and starting blocks and then to the event site. After the races competitors went to Post Event Control where their confiscated items were retuned and then on occasions to the Doping control area. So with so many competitors and events it was a mammoth task all repeated again for the Paralympics. The design of the stadium holding 80,000 spectators was also described, below the actual stadium there was a series of tunnels with the call rooms and all the usual offices required for personnel and also a restaurant which was open 24/7 providing food relating to each country all fully labelled with content, etc. It was really quite eye-opening to hear all that was going on behind the scenes to make the event so fantastic. To mark the centenary of the WI members are doing 100 of anything they wish – running, swimming, baking, walking, cycling, etc. etc. so one member made 100 beautifully decorated cup cakes and they were sold for 50p each with the money raised going to ACWW (Association of Country Women of the World) and they literally went like hot cakes selling out in no time at all. See pictures of Sally and her cupcakes and Pat D getting her 100 certificate on the 100 Challenge page. A day at Newbury races was enjoyed by many members, no-one came away with a fortune but it was great fun and a similar event will be arranged by request for next year. There are many events arranged for the next few months, two walks, one in Winchester and one in Oakley, visits to the Embroidery Exhibition at Greenham Common and Bombay Sapphire, a skittles evening, a jumble sale and a Craft, Coffee and Cake morning on 21st November at the Village Hall in Andover Road. There are also many Federation events including a Centenary lunch at Audleys Wood, a Cream Tea and Visit to Hants Archives, the Autumn Meeting at The Anvil with Peter and Dan Snow as guest speakers and and various craft events. At the October meeting members will try their hand at pumpkin carving. |
