Joyce Meader‘s earlier talk on knitting from the 19th Century was enjoyed so much that she was welcomed back to continue her talk from the 1950s this month. She collects examples from other people or she knits them herself. These articles were handed round for the audience to see. Some of these were pictured on our face book page afterwards. There was a woollen hood to keep out the smog, toilet holders in the shape of poodles, knitted underwear and a bikini. Apparently the last swimsuit pattern is dated 1987!

In September 2021 Hampshire WI held a Thanksgiving lunch. two members of Sopley Village WI and two members of Oakley & Deane WI were seated at the same table and enjoyed getting to know each other. We found that the two WIs had quite a bit in common, even though one was over 100 years old and the other still in single digits (at the time). Sopley Village WI were thinking of setting up a website and as Oakley & Deane WI had one and the member who updated it was at the lunch this connection was continued after the meeting with zoom meetings to help with Sopley Village WI’s web site.
Other connections were made and we found that both WIs had walking groups. It was suggested that we might get the groups together to explore each other’s part of the county. It took quite a bit of comparing dates and ideas, but eventually in November 2023 four members of Sopley Village WI were picked up from Basingstoke Station by four members of Oakley & Deane WI and we all went to Steventon, a very small village not far from Oakley where Jane Austen was born. After a look round the lovely small church (see picture of us all in front of the church, taken by the very friendly local postman), we walked around Steventon, seeing the field in which the rectory, where Jane was born, used to be. Then we went to Oakley, enjoying a lunch in the local pub and visit to the village pond, before taking the Sopley ladies back to Basingstoke for their train. We were so lucky with the weather, the next day was very wet. We all got along famously and there is a plan for the Oakley walkers to visit Sopley and walk around Christchurch in the spring next year. |
